The lake area and its three islands

Strategically located on the border with Tuscany, La Sosta di Annibale is the ideal farmhouse in Umbria to visit the nearby hilltop town of Cortona and all the villages overlooking Lake Trasimeno. The lake’s surrounding hills and plains sit, in fact, astride the border between Umbria and Tuscany and are widely considered a natural oasis where several valuable fish and fauna species can be observed.

The shores of Lake Trasimeno, the fourth largest italian lake and the largest natural park in the region, are dotted with lovely villages such as Passignano, Castiglione del Lago, San Feliciano and Tuoro. In addition, several other charming villages can be found perched on the surrounding hills, including Castel Rigone and Città della Pieve. Scattered across the lake are also three small islands, the Maggiore, the Minore and the Polvese; all three of them can be reached by ferry. Besides a wealth of cultural sigths, the lake also provides the opportunity to engage in several fun activities (beach, water spoorts, cycling, horseback riding) and, above all, an extraordinary culinary offer rich in typical products.

Cortona

From farmhouse La Sosta di Annibale in Umbria, it’s only a very short drive to visit Tuscany. Only a short distance, from the lake, across the valley sits ci Cortona, a walled hilltop town with ancient Etruscan origins. The town is perched high on a hill overlooking the whole of the Valdichiana, affording stunning views of Lake Trasimeno. Cortona boasts a wealth of cultural, artistic and architectural sights and attractions. Its MAEC museum showcases important archaeological finds from all main etruscan areas in the surroundings whilst the Museo Diocesano is home to the Annunciazione by Fra Angelico.

If, during your stay in one of the 8 apartments with swimming pool of farmhouse La Sosta di Annibale, you should decide to take a daytrip Cortona, will find out how absolutely delightful it is to stroll through its narrow streets providing breath-taking views over the Valdichiana. The old town is alive with dozens of arts and craft shops, boutiques and restaurants, so don’t miss out on the opportunity to stop for luch or dinner and feat your eys and palate on fine traditional fare and excellent DOC wines such as he locally produced Syrah.
